However, once this procedure is complete, you may have to make a few changes to your daily routine while your mouth is healing. In particular, you will need to stay away from coffee and other hot beverages for a while. When will you be able to start enjoying your daily cup of coffee again? Here’s what you need to know when preparing for your tooth extraction.

Why Shouldn’t You Drink Coffee After a Tooth Extraction?

After a tooth has been removed, a blood clot forms at the socket where it used to be. This blood clot is meant to help keep the exposed bone and nerves safe while your mouth is recovering. But if you drink coffee or another type of hot beverage, it could end up dislodging the blood clot. As a result, you may experience a condition known as dry socket, which is often very painful and can significantly slow down healing.

On top of that, the nerves in your mouth will be more vulnerable than normal following a tooth extraction. Drinking anything hot while your nerves are vulnerable can easily lead to significant discomfort.

How Long Will It Be Until You Can Drink Coffee Again?

The amount of time that the mouth needs to heal after a tooth extraction can vary from patient to patient. That said, it’s normally recommended that you wait at least five days before drinking coffee again. To be on the safe side, though, you should stick to small amounts until your mouth has fully recovered, which normally takes around two weeks.

What Should You Eat and Drink After a Tooth Extraction?

If you want to speed up healing time after a tooth extraction, you need to make a point of keeping your body hydrated. As such, you should plan on drinking plenty of water during your recovery. Make sure it is not carbonated water, however; any type of fizzy drink could dislodge your blood clot.

During meals, you should avoid eating anything that’s hard, crunchy, or spicy. It’s best to stick to soft and liquid foods. Excellent examples include yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and soup that isn’t too hot. Plan your diet carefully to ensure that your body is getting the nutrients it needs for a successful healing process.

As long as you stick to the right dietary habits and follow your dentist’s post-op instructions, you can look forward to a smooth, complication-free healing process. You can look forward to enjoying a nice cup of coffee again once your recovery is complete.

About the Practice

At Applegate Dental PLLC, our dentists make it easy for our patients to achieve their smile goals and maintain excellent oral health.
