Gum Recontouring Myths You Shouldn’t Fall For

myths crossed out and chalk points to facts

Throughout ancient history, mythology has developed around phenomenon that people didn’t understand fully. Without certain knowledge and the ability to study science closely, these groups of people used what they did know to create myths and stories to explain what was going on. Unfortunately, myths still exist today. Gum recontouring isn’t an extremely common or well-known dental treatment for those outside the profession, so some people assume incorrect things about it. Here are some prevalent myths about this treatment and the truth behind them.

Myth #1: Gum Recontouring Is Risky.

Although every procedure you undergo comes with some rare, potential risks, your dentist trains rigorously to make sure they can perform the treatment correctly and safely. When it comes to gum recontouring, some patients may worry that removing too much gum tissue will reveal the roots of their teeth. This is a valid concern because it’s true! However, your dentist needs to know how much is appropriate to take away without putting your teeth and facial appearance in danger.

Myth #2: Gum Recontouring Is Treatment for Excessive Tissue Only.

The most commonly known reason for this procedure is to address a “gummy smile.” When all teeth appear small, you can seem to have too much of this pink tissue, but this scenario isn’t the only one that merits this treatment. Sometimes, an area of teeth doesn’t match the same gum-to-teeth ratio that others have, which can make the whole smile look uneven. Slight recontouring can rectify the inconsistency and create a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Myth #3: Gum Recontouring Is Painful.

Unfortunately, dental experiences from the distant past still strike fear in patients’ hearts, but the truth is that dentistry rarely involves discomfort nowadays. Along with local and topical anesthetics that numb the area, technology with soft tissue lasers has advanced, making recontouring much more efficient, precise, and comfortable. As the laser cauterizes the tissue, you have no need for sutures or scalpels and can have a smoother, faster recovery.

Myth #4: Gum Recontouring Is Temporary.

Many dental procedures may bring long-term results, especially if you take excellent care of your oral health, but ultimately, they need to be repeated. Gum recontouring isn’t usually one of them! With very few exceptions, gum tissue doesn’t tend to grow back after recontouring, meaning this procedure is largely permanent. In other words, you shouldn’t need another recontouring treatment in the future.

When you have correct information available to you in modern times, you don’t have to live in fear or trust myths that mislead you. Gum recontouring doesn’t need to be mysterious or confusing. If you ever have questions about a dental treatment, your dentist will be happy to provide clear answers that can take you to your dream smile.
